Maldives - archipelago and island state of the same name, located in the Indian Ocean, approx. 500 km southwest of the southern tip India.
Characteristic
In 1965, the Maldives gained independence, previously a sultanate, first under the Dutch protectorate, then the British. After three years, a republic was proclaimed (the official name is the Republic of Maldives). Maldives is a Muslim country.
Geography
The Maldives is an archipelago of 1,192 coral islands formed from 26 atolls, or atholhu in Dhivehi - the source of the word. They are not individual islands, but gigantic ring coral formations hundreds of kilometers wide that have broken up into countless islands. There are 200 inhabited islands and 80 islands with tourist centers.
The names of the atolls are complex as atolls have both long traditional Dhivehi names such as Maalhosmadulu Dhekunuburi and code names such as Baa which refer to administrative regions and may consist of more than one geographic atoll. Codenames are letters of the Dhivehi alphabet, but for people outside the Maldives they are easier to remember and pronounce, which is why they are popular in the travel industry. Of the 20 groups of administrative atolls, only 10 (parts) are open to tourism, and from north to south they are:
- Lhaviyani (Miladhunmadulu Uthuruburi)
- Raa (Maalhosmadulu Uthuruburi)
- Baa (Maalhosmadulu Dhekunuburi)
- Kaafu (North and South Male Atoll) - home to the capital of Male and the airport, most tourist hotels are located here.
- Alifu (Ari) - West of Kaafu, the second most popular group.
- Vaavu (Felidhu)
- Meemu (Mulak)
- Faafu (Nilandhe Atholhu Uthuruburi)
- Dhaalu (Nilandhe Atholhu Dhekunuburi)
- Seenu (Addu) - The southernmost atoll, the second largest population and Gan International Airport.
Climate
The Maldives are tropical islands with plenty of sunshine and temperatures around 30 ° C all year round. Rainfall increases significantly during the southwest monsoons from April to October, especially from June to August.
Culture
The Maldives is an all-Muslim Sunni country and the local culture is a mix of Sinhala, South Indian and Arab influences. While alcohol, pork, dogs, and the public religion of non-Muslim religions are prohibited in inhabited islands, tourist islands may be exempt from religious restrictions.
Please note that the weekend in the Maldives runs from Friday to Saturday, during which banks, government offices and many shops are closed. However, you won't notice this in hotels, except that lunch hours may be shifted due to Friday prayers.
