Mandø is one of the Danish Wadden Islands off the coast of South Jutland. The smallest of the three islands (Mandø, Fanø and Rømø, Langli is a Hallig and Jordsand and Koresand Hochsands) was originally a Hallig and was only protected by a sea dike in 1937, which gave it the status of an island.
About 40 people live on Mandø, there is a campsite and a few holiday apartments; The special feature of this island, however, is its limited accessibility - and that the inhabitants do not want to change anything. Mandø is connected to the mainland by the so-called Låningsvej, a dam that is not passable at high tide, is not paved and can be under water even at low tide, so that the crossing with your own car is always a little adventure. If Mandø were to get an asphalted, flood-proof dam, the crowds would probably flock to Mandø, as is customary on the neighboring islands. But the island is too small for that, and the residents appreciate its tranquility - so it will probably remain with only temporary accessibility for the time being. In addition to Låningsvej, there is also Ebbevej, which runs across the mudflats about 1 km south at Vester Vedsted, but is not usable for cars and is forbidden, including all-wheel-drive vehicles! Only special tractors or horse-drawn carriages drive over here.

By plane
By train
By bus
There are the so-called Mandø-Busses, a cart pulled by a tractor that offers tourist trips at low tide over the Ebbevej, otherwise on the Låningsvej. For travelers without their own vehicle, this transport option is the only way to get to Mandø. If in Vester Vedsted you have the feeling that you have just missed the planned departure of the tractor buses, it is worth waiting to see if you were simply there "too early" and the tour from the island had not yet arrived. Sometimes there are also departures between the scheduled departures.

As already explained, Låningsvej, the only access to the island that is accessible by car, depends on the tide and can only be used at low tide. However, the time window for the passage can be shortened even at low tide, e.g. when there is a strong westerly wind.
It is advised to only sail up to a maximum water level of 50 cm. The current water level can be requested daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. from Mandø Brugs on 45 75 44 51 02 or from the automatic tide announcement on 45 75 42 29 24.
By boat
By bicycle
Coming to Mandø by bike requires a certain willingness to take risks and an all-terrain bike. As with cars, you have to cycle the Låningsvei, with the restrictions described above.
