Maokong (貓 空) is a district of Taipei in the Wenshan District.

Maokong is located in the southeast of Taipei and is surrounded by mountains. The name Maokong means cat cave and comes from the river that washed holes in the stones. Tea has been grown in Maokong since the 18th century. In 1866 the Englishman John Dodd founded the first company for the successful export of tea from Maokong to Macau and America. During the Japanese occupation, the baozhong and oolong teas achieved high awards and brought the tea world fame. Since 1980, the area has been a tourist tea-growing area and serves the city population as a recreational area. Maokong has the best view over Taipei.

  • Maokong cable car. The cable car is the main attraction of Maokong in a 20 minute drive to reach the destination station Maokong. It covers 4 km and an altitude difference of 275 meters. In addition to the terminus, the gondola has two other stops, Taipei Zoo South and Zhinan Temple. You can get on and off anywhere. The special thing is that there are crystal cabins, which have a glass plate as the floor and from which you can have a wonderful view of the landscape.   • Hiking trails. In Maokong there are various hiking trails along the tea plantations and tea houses. Everywhere you have the opportunity to sit down and drink tea and enjoy the wonderful view over Taipei or to visit a small exhibition. The area up to the fourth is divided into three zones, each with a special theme, which can be experienced along the hiking trails. The red zone with the history of tea as a theme. The yellow zone with special viewpoints and the blue zone with ecology as the main theme. The most famous trails are the Camphor Tree Trail, the Sanxuan Temple Trail, and the Zhinan Tea Trail.
