Maria Enzersdorf is a market town in Lower Austria Industrial district. It is part of the continuous settlement area in the southern area of Vienna, which extends from the city limits of Vienna to Wiener Neustadt. The municipality of Maria Enzersdorf is known for Liechtenstein Castle and for the federal sports center Südstadt.
background
The wine-growing place was first mentioned as Engelschalkesdorf in the 11th century. The place experienced a boom from the early 19th century, when the slopes of the southern Vienna Woods became a popular summer resort and villa location for wealthy Viennese. This continued and the community continued to grow, especially from the 1950s onwards. In the 1960s, a large satellite city in Vienna, the Südstadt, emerged on the municipal area.
From 1938-1956 Maria Enzersdorf belonged to Greater Vienna, today the community is part of the Mödling district. Maria Enzersdorf forms with the neighboring communities Mödling, Brunn am Gebirge, Hinterbrühl, Gießhübl and Wiener Neudorf a continuous, uniform housing development; the municipal boundaries are usually only recognizable by means of the place-name signs.
In addition to the Altort, there is also the Südstadt in the east of the community (garden city from the 1960s).
