background
The administrative seat of Marigot is a city that has grown over time. The original fishing village with a large swamp area on the lagoon, founded around 1689, has undergone major upheaval in recent years. There are older buildings in a West Indian style with a brick floor and a wooden floor above with a large veranda and many decorations. From the time of sugar cane cultivation, only the plantation names remain, after which the outskirts of the small town are named today. Today's Rue de la Republique was originally called "Grand'rue". It is one of the oldest streets in the place. The whole port area was completely renovated. Land has been flushed, an additional road has been built and a large marina is under construction. The flair is more reminiscent of a town on the Mediterranean coast. Small cafés and bistros lie next to elegant brand stores with the latest in European fashion design. It is rounded off by the obligatory jewelers and electronics stores. After the opening times and on Sundays, however, the town is almost deserted and deserted.
The area around the harbor with the market and the pier for ferries is the scene of a colorful market on Wednesdays and Saturdays, where many home-grown products, tropical fruits, spices and freshly caught fish are offered.
Around the very touristy marina Marina Port La Royale you will find a number of sometimes intrusive restaurants. The busy Rue du Général de Gaulle is the main street. The tourist information and the museum have already been relocated to the southern outskirts of the city towards Sandy Ground.

Saint Martins' largest historical monument, Fort Louis, watches over the city. Today, of course, the fort no longer fulfills its original purpose, but the steep climb is rewarded by the panorama of the city, the island and the surrounding sea.
The districts are located on the southern outskirts Bellevue, St. James and St. Jean, in the East Concordia, Jump and Colombier, the settlements close to the north Galisbay, Hameau du Pont, Agrément and Rambaud at. Almost all of these parts of the Orst have arisen from earlier sugar plantations. The northern arterial road in the direction of Grand-Case leads over the Durat Bridge, built around 1789. Most of the administrative facilities, all secondary schools, the police branch, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the new hospital are located in the Concordia district.
