Here were scenes for the Shire, the home of the hobbits, for the film trilogy Lord of the Rings turned. Facades of houses have been set into the hills as a backdrop and everything has been lushly planted afterwards. The open-air area can only be visited on a guided tour. The admission ticket should be ordered in advance on the Internet, as the number of places per tour is limited. A bus takes you from the visitor center to the site. Then you continue on foot and on a walk you can find out details about the shooting. There is enough time to take photos. After a stop at the Green Dragon Inn, where drinks are served free of charge, the tour continues until you get back to the visitor center. The tour lasts around 2 hours. There is a café, toilets and a souvenir shop at the visitor center.Price: from NZD 84, -.
