background
Bronze Age finds were made in the municipality, which suggest a settlement around 1500 BC. The Romans build around 15 BC. A Roman road through the Schaanwald. Subsequently, around 100 AD in Schaanwald and around 200 AD in Mauren, a Roman manor was built. Another manor was built in Schaanwald around 200-300 AD. This even had a bathing facility. Sometime after AD 400, the Roman settlements are abandoned. Towards the end of the 7th century, a Christian church was built in Mauren. The simple hall structure does not yet have an apse. This does not arise until after the year 800. During this time the dead are buried east of the apse. In 1178, Moors is named Muron first mentioned in a document when it passed into the possession of the St. Sebastian women's monastery in Schänis. Around 1200 the second church was built on the site of the first. Mauren has been an independent parish since 1305 at the latest. The complete renovation of the church begins around 1500. The Romanesque apse is replaced by a Gothic chancel. The Romanesque nave is provided with larger Gothic windows. In 1650, a wooden bell house with an octagonal broken pointed helmet was added to the tower.
