Mayaguana is an island of Bahamas.

background

Mayaguana is located approx. 560 km southeast of Nassau and is also the easternmost of the Bahama Islands. It is roughly rectangular in shape, 42 km long and between 5 and 11 km wide. Today the island is a popular destination for sport fishermen and yachts heading for the Caribbean. The island's long, deserted beaches guarantee a “Robinson Crusoe feeling”. There are a number of beach lakes on the north coast and several wrecks off the north coast. The densely forested island was long considered uninhabited, it wasn't until 1812 that the first settlers came from the nearby TURKS & CAICOS ISLANDS. Main place is Abraham's Bay. In the northwest corner of the island the two villages Betsy Bay and Pirate's Well. There is a clinic in each of the three locations and a public telephone in Abraham's Bay. The eastern half is still totally undeveloped.

During the Apollo and Mercury missile programs, the Americans operated a missile observation post on the island.

There is no industry, just some fishing. To improve the infrastructure, the government launched an eco-tourism project of 10,000 hectares in 1993. A botanical garden is being set up on the east coast, there is an experimental farm, and cycling and hiking trails.

An electricity and telephone network has only been set up on the whole island since 1997. Sailors can refuel in Abraham's Bay.
