Mayreau is an island of the Grenadines and belongs to Saint Vincent.

background

The island is a little longer than 2 km, 1.5 km wide and 2.8 km² in size. North of Saline Bay is the only place on the slope of a flat hill. This hill is 86 m high and on it stands the Catholic village church. From there you have a beautiful view of the Tobago Cays. There is only a short road and seven cars on the island. The village does not have a name of its own. There is no bank, no water pipes and no airfield. Rainwater is collected as drinking water and some residents have a private power generator. The government has been laying power lines since 2003.

The residents live mainly from fishing and every family owns a fishing boat.

This island was also originally inhabited by Ciboney, Arawak and Carib Indians. When Europeans conquered the archipelago, it was the French Monsieur de L`isle who claimed the island for himself. After the signing of the Treaty of Paris, he was allowed to remain on the island, although it had now fallen into English possession.

In 1776 there were six Europeans and 66 slaves living on the island. They planted cotton and lived from exporting it.

During the Napoleonic Wars (1800–1815), a branch of the Saint-Hilaire family came to Mayreau and claimed the land for themselves. The last offspring of the family on this island was Jane-Rose de Saint-Hilaire. On the island she was only dubbed Miss Jane-Rose. She ruled there like a feudal ruler. Their slaves were allowed to build huts and plant as much as they wanted. Half of the proceeds were shared with her. After her death in 1915, the Eustace family inherited their property through marriage. The exception was 9 hectares each, which had been sold to a Canadian family and an area of the same size on which the village was located, owned by the government of Saint Vincent. Except for these two pieces of land, the island has remained in the possession of the Eustace descendants to this day.

The French-Catholic cultural heritage is unique in contrast to the other Grenadine islands.
