By plane
The new Kuala Namu Airport (KNO) is about 40 minutes from the center of Medan. The city center of Medan is very good and very easy to reach from there with a new express train. If you want to be particularly comfortable, and perhaps want to continue your journey the next day, you will find a middle class hotel "d'primahotel Medan" right in the station building in the city center, not cheap, but ok for 1-2 nights, with air conditioning against mosquitos.
