Map of Meisenheim

Meisenheim is a city in the northernmost tip of the Palatinate highlands and known for its completely preserved medieval old town.

background

Meisenheim is the only town in the entire region that has not been destroyed or burned down once since the Middle Ages.

Meisenheim's history is very eventful. Historically, the city first belonged to the Counts of Veldenz and was then the seat of the Duchy of Palatinate-Zweibrücken with its own castle, but was occupied several times by French troops. With the Congress of Vienna, Meisenheim fell to the Landgraviate of Hesse-Homburg, 110 km away, and was thus completely isolated in the region, as it had customs borders with all surrounding states. In 1866, when Hessen-Homburg died out, Prussia conquered Meisenheim and incorporated the city into its Rhine province. Meisenheim remained Prussian until the state of Rhineland-Palatinate was founded after the Second World War.

Meisenheim is still regarded as part of the Palatinate Uplands for tourism, although the city did not belong to the Bavarian Rhine Palatinate in the borders until 1945. The links with the rest of the Palatinate are traditionally very close up to the (former) rail connection via the Glantalbahn.

Churches

  • 1  Castle Church, Schlossplatz 1. The Protestant castle church in Meisenheim is a late Gothic hall church from the 15th century. It was built under the leadership of the Dukes of Pfalz-Zweibrücken after the old church in the city was destroyed in armed conflicts. In the 18th century, the church was renovated in the Baroque style without changing the main features of the Gothic structure. The church is also the last resting place of numerous dukes of the Palatinate-Zweibrücken line.
  • 2  Lutheran Church, Rathausgasse 1. The Lutheran church was built in the 18th century for the Lutheran congregation in Meisenheim next to the reformed castle church. After the church union, the building was no longer needed as a church and served for a long time as a warehouse, since 1911 as a Protestant parish hall.
  • 3  St. Anthony of Padua, Klenkertor 7. The baroque Catholic church of St. Anthony of Padua from the 17th century originally belonged to an existing Franciscan monastery in Meisenheim, but now serves as the parish church of the Catholic parish. The church tower was added to the building at a later date. Parts of the interior are from the Polish king Stanislaus I. Leszczyńskiwho lived in exile in Meisenheim.
  • 4  Meisenheim synagogue, Saarstrasse 3a. The former synagogue from the 19th century was built on a slope a little above the old town of Meisenheim. During the Reichskristallnacht in 1938, the two towers of the synagogue were torn down and the interior was destroyed, but the structure was not damaged. After the war, the synagogue served as a grain silo for a long time until a development association acquired the building in 1988 and here the House of Encounters with a permanent exhibition on the Jewish history of the region.

Buildings

  • 5  Meisenheim Castle, Schlossplatz 2-3. From the former Meisenheim Castle, only the Magdalenenbau from the 17th century remains, the other parts of the castle were demolished after a fire in the 18th century. The Magdalenenbau was built as the residence of the duke's widow Magdalena von Jülich-Kleve-Berg and was later redesigned and expanded in their interests by the Landgraves of Hessen-Homburg. Today the castle serves the kreuznacher diakonie as a home for mentally handicapped people and is therefore not open to the public.
  • 6  Lower gate. The Untertor is the only one of three former city gates of the Meisenheim city fortifications that has been preserved to this day. The gate once guarded the arterial road to the east to the other villages in the county of Veldenz, including the (also preserved) bridge over the Glan. Today the gate is the seat of the city archives.
  • 7  Boos from Waldeck'scher Hof, Obergasse 26. The Boos von Waldeck'sche Hof is one of the oldest preserved buildings in the city. The construction is estimated to be in the 14th century.
  • 8  town hall, Untergasse 23. The town hall from the 16th century testifies to the former importance of the city. It is still used by the city of Meisenheim, but can be rented for celebrations.
