With an area of 140 km², the municipality of Mels is the largest municipality in St. Gallen and is one of the 20 largest municipalities in Switzerland in terms of area. Church institutions are also of great importance in Mels. With their wealth of churches and chapels, they are always close to the population right down into the side valleys. The best way to get to Mels is via Sargans train station. Most of the express trains from Chur, Zurich and St. Gallen stop there. From there a public bus goes to Mels.

The annual alpine descent is very colorful and takes place every September. The Mels Carnival is also known throughout Switzerland. The Mels Carnival is one of the most traditional street carnivals in Switzerland. The "Ihuttlätä" on Dirty Thursday and the live night of the Guggenmusik Nidbergschrinzer are definitely worth seeing.

ZooThe zoo goddess is called Verena. The minstrel Tannhäuser is closely associated with the goddess and later saint Verena. According to a legend from the Sarganserland, the poet lets himself be seduced by the rampant life on the Venusberg. Tannhäuser stayed for seven years, then regretted his lifestyle. However, since he did not obtain absolution from the Pope, he returned to the Venusberg: "So I'll go back to Frau Vrenas Berg, don't let anything put me off. And sleep until the last day. Until God himself wakes me up », this verse from the Sarganser Tannhauser song describes the return of the minstrel to the hill of love.
Legend has it that he who redeems him becomes the owner of the golden chain that spans the Venusberg, as well as of the skittles that is hidden on the mountain. Whoever wants to get on the trail of the love saga and this mountain does not only have to be content with the legendary literature, but can experience the mysticism of this love mountain firsthand. From Mels train station, a one and a half hour hike leads to the famous Sagenberg in Sarganserland - the so-called zoo.
