Mindelo is the second largest city of Cape Verde and by far the largest on the island Sao Vicente. It is located in the north of the island Baía do Porto Grande: This large bay is the caldera of an extinct underwater volcano. In the 19th century the Portuguese and English used this natural harbor to supply their steamships with coal.
