Minehead is a city on the west coast of Somerset in SomersetThe town of Bridgwater is around 30 km to the east, the county capital, Taunton around 40 km southeast and Exeter around 70 km south.
background
Minehead is on Bristol Channel and its beach forms the western end of Bridgwater Bay. It is the largest city in the Exmoor region. It is located right on the sea and is a typical Victorian seaside resort that, although its prime, is still a tourist destination. The sandy beach and the nearby train station of the West Somerset Railway with train service steam locomotives as well as the promenade The Parade with hotels, restaurants and pubs and many tourist shops, but also regular shops for general supplies are very popular with Exmoor tourists.
Minehead was first mentioned in a document in the Domesday Book in 1087, and May 1st has been Minehead's feast day since 1465. A great fire destroyed the center of Minehead in 1791, only 2 stone houses remained. Minehead has been operated by the West Somerset District Council managed. The Town Council was founded in 1983
The age of the seaside resort began for Minehead with the railroad. The Quay Town, located on the pebble beach, offers what you would expect from an English seaside resort. Tourism reached its peak here in Victorian times, when there was finally a train connection to the water.
getting there
The coastal road A 39 is winding from Bridgwater by Minehead. The next larger towns on the A 39 are to the west Porlock and east Dunster, where the A 396 branches off south from the A 39. Minehead is the terminus of the West Somerset Railway, a museum railway that has resumed regular steam train service from Taunton to Minehead after regular operations have closed.
