Geography
Located very close to the Pyrenees, the Massif Central, the Montagne Noire, and equidistant from the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, Montauban is located in the heart of the southwest. It is an often sunny city.
The city is watered by three rivers:
- the Tarn
- the Tescou
- the Canal du Midi (listed as a World Heritage Site).
Story
Around the Benedictine abbey of Montauriol founded in the 9th century, an agricultural village was organized very early on. The ever-increasing power of the abbey leads the population of Montauriol to ask for the foundation of a new city.
October 1144 : Count Alphonse Jourdain founded Montauban. Designed on a geometric plan with streets drawn with a line leading to a central square, it can be considered as the first of the new medieval towns of the South.
XIIIe ‑ XVe centuries : The day after the crusade against the Albigenses, Montauban entered a prosperous period. We build theSaint-Jacques church, the Old Bridge. The Hundred Years War and the Black Death mark the end of this happy period. A new economic boom is emerging in the second half of the XVe century.
From 1576 : Henri de Navarre, who stayed in the city several times, included in the new walls the suburbs of the city, which asserted itself as a Protestant stronghold until the Edict of Nantes.
1621 : Louis XIII lifts the siege of Montauban which in 1629 submits to Richelieu. Catholic and Protestant bourgeoisies now coexist in a city that has become a regional capital which began a real metamorphosis in the 17th and 18th centuries.
1790 : Relegated to the rank of sub-prefecture of the Lot, Montauban did not find its role as the capital of the department until 1808 when the Tarn-et-Garonne was created by Napoleon 1st.
City of 55,000 inhabitants, Montauban has retained over the centuries its checkerboard plan and its position as a crossroads in the heart of a vast rural area.

- 1 Saint-Jacques Church – built in 1230, this church is characterized by its Toulouse-style bell tower with a fortified base. We notice traces of cannonballs recalling the 400 cannon shots fired by the army of Louis XIII.
- 2 Old Bridge – Built between 1311 and 1335, this bridge was once the only link with the Ville Bourbon district. It has a flat apron and rests on 7 arches.
- 3 National Square – located in the heart of the city since its birth, the square is the result of several construction campaigns. It was first in wood and rebuilt in brick with double covers.
- 4 Notre-Dame de l'Assomption Cathedral – built from 1621, it is a model of classical architecture on the plans of two great architects François d'Orbay, and Robert de Cotte. It houses a carved walnut organ and Ingres's "Vows of Louis XIII".
- Old college – built from 1658 by the Jesuits, then became the Royal College in 1762. During the Revolution it served as a cannon foundry. Today it is the cultural center which houses the Center for the Interpretation of Architecture and Heritage and the tourist office.
