background

It is the capital of the Arrondissement of Montbard and the administrative seat of the Canton of Montbard.

The city lies on Brenne and the Canal de Bourgogne. The area was settled in ancient times. During the time of the Gauls there was a druid community here. In the Middle Ages, a place developed around the castle. Aleth, the mother of Bernhard von Clairvaux, was born in the castle in 1070. The settlement was granted city rights in 1231. While the castle was a secondary residence of the Dukes of Valois from Burgundy, it was besieged in 1590 by the Count of Tavannes, who fought the Duke of Nemours on behalf of the French King Henri IV Canal de Bourgogne opened in 1833. In 1926, Montbard became a sub-prefecture by the decree of Raymond Poincarés.

getting there

By plane

By train

The place owns the 1 Montbard train station on the Paris – Lyon line. Shortly after the train station, the TGV branch begins, which connects Dijon to the TGV Paris-Lyon route.

In the morning and in the afternoon TERs (regional express) stop every hour from Dijon (37 minutes) and Laroche-Migennes (where you can change trains from Auxerre), three times a day without changing from Auxerre (approx. 1:20 hours). From Paris-Bercy there are continuous TERs six times a day, which take around 2:20 hours, four times a day even TGVs from Paris-Gare de Lyon stop, they only take just over an hour. From Dijon, however, the TGV is not worth it, it is only 2 minutes faster than the TER (but costs almost € 5 surcharge).
