It was headed by Ľudovít Štúr, Jozef Miloslav Hurban and Michal Miloslav Hodža. He organized the Slovak uprising of 1848-1849 and was the executive power in parts of Slovakia occupied by Slovak-Austrian troops fighting against Hungarian revolutionaries. On September 19, 1848, the first meeting took place on Slovak territory in Myjava as part of the first campaign of Slovak volunteers from Vienna via Moravia to Slovakia. At this meeting Ľudovít Štúr declared the independence of the Slovak nation from Hungary. however, the Slovak national council only administered Myjava and its surroundings and the volunteers were defeated after a few days. The Slovak National Council also participated in the organization of other Slovak volunteer campaigns during the revolution. It ceased to exist in the fall of 1849.
