Mzwane Konzchi (მწვანე კონცხი, English: Mtsvane Kontskhi; also known in the literal translation “Green Cape” (English), Зелёный Мысь / Seljonyj Mys' (Russian); the German variant "Green Cape" is not common; is a small settlement on the coast about ten kilometers north of Batumi, where there is not only a beautiful bathing beach but also the one that was opened in 1912 and is worth seeing Batumi Botanical Garden (ბათუმის ბოტანიკური ბაღი) is located. To the north of the park, near the village of Tschakwi, is the entrance to the Mtirala National Park.

background

The botanical garden of Batumi was founded in 1912 directly on the range of hills near the Green Cape about 15 km north of Batumi and is one of the largest in Georgia. Since the railway also traverses the rocky cliffs of the Green Cape with a tunnel, thanks to the easy accessibility, a beach settlement was created when the park accesses close to the city, which is very popular with Georgians and foreigners during the Soviet era as it is today.

The formerly independent settlement was established in 2011, together with the neighboring towns Machindjauri (მახინჯაური, engl. Makhinjauri) and Chakwi (ჩაქვი, engl. Chakvi; old inscription also Tschakwa) incorporated into Batumi.

getting there

over Batumi.

By bus

Marshrutkas on lines 31 and 40, the rare city bus 15, go directly from the city center of Batumi to the botanical garden. You will then stop at the large parking lot.

In the street

In 2009 a new expressway with a tunnel was built through the mountain range of the Green Cape. For the access to Mzwane Konzchi coming from Batumi you have to turn right onto the old road (signposted "Mtsvane Kontskhi"), then immediately turn left (not signposted) and follow the narrow and winding road for about one kilometer. Then you reach a paid parking lot.

Coming from the north you can also take the old road (turn right shortly after Tschakwi, it is signposted), which takes a little longer, but offers very nice views. Just before you reach the trunk road again, turn right.

mobility

The beach area can be reached on foot in less than two minutes from the parking lot, as is the main entrance to the botanical garden. The beach itself is covered with gravel up to the size of a fist, so you should wear good shoes. From the main beach, a rusty and wobbly metal walkway leads around a rock into a beautiful, secluded bay with a beach. Be careful, there are often no floor slabs and steps.

In the botanical garden an electric bus (2019: 5 GEL) drives through the park to the north entrance at Tschakwi and back (there and back counts as two trips). However, to get to this bus you have to climb a lot of stairs. The north entrance at Tschakwi is barrier-free.

Tourist Attractions

  • Botanical Garden
  • Mzwane Konzchi beach
  • In the vicinity of the beach there are some old catering huts that date back to the Soviet era (and apparently have never been renovated). So you can somehow still experience the flair of the 1980s. Some of these huts are still in operation and have beautiful wall paintings. There is also a shooting gallery where you can win shabby plastic prizes with an air rifle. The specialty there is the shop sign, which the two main characters of the cult cartoon series "Nu, Pogodi!" shows.
  • Vacant Machindschauri Post Office - also an exciting, massive building of the Soviet architecture of the 1950s. Today only the shell is left.

activities

Access to the beach, which consists of coarse gravel, is free of charge. The specialty of the beach is that there is even natural shade in the back, northern area of the botanical garden, at least in the morning when the sun is shining from the east. Nonetheless, you can rent chairs and umbrellas here (half a day 6 GEL for two chairs and an umbrella). If you make your way over the rickety iron footbridge to the northern, lonely beach, you will also find shade from the trees there in the afternoon. Unfortunately, the beautiful beach in the north is completely littered.

Right at the main entrance to the beach there is an old pier that leads out into the sea, from which you can jump about 3 meters into the sea. Be careful not to slap the lower areas of the pier when jumping down!

shop

  • At the breakpoint, there are also souvenir shops interspersed between the small bars, which among other things sell beer mugs made of Adjar bamboo, as well as handmade bouquets of mussel flowers. The same stands can also be found in the Botanical Garden.
  • Flying vendors sell small snacks, souvenirs and also slippers and towels on the beach.
