Munchenstein is a Swiss Municipality in the canton Basel-Country.

background

The community consists of the districts, Münchenstein Dorf, Neumünchenstein and Neuewelt / Brüglingen.

The community was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1196, but it was not given its current name until 1295, which refers to the castle.

On June 14, 1891, the community became known worldwide when the railway bridge of the Jura Railway over the Birs collapsed. The accident, in which 78 people died and 131 were injured, is still the worst railway accident in Switzerland.

  • Munchenstein ruins. Remains of the former Münchenstein Castle, above the village of Münchenstein.
  • The Village center von Münchenstein, in which well-preserved houses from the 16th century are still standing.
  • Schaulager. A mix between a public museum, an art warehouse and an art research institute.
  • The is located in Brüglingen on the border with Basel Park in the countryside, the 2nd Swiss Exhibition for Gardening and Landscaping took place here in 1980. To this day, their name has changed Green 80 held. Tram stop; New World (Line 10)
