Frauenchiemsee Monastery is a monastery of Bavaria, Germany.

About

Short history

The monastery was founded in 782 by Duke Tassilo III of Bavaria. In 788 it became a Carolingian imperial abbey. King Louis the German, who also ruled Bavaria from 826, appointed his daughter, Irmengard, as abbess in 857. The monastery was destroyed during the Hungarian invasion, going through a period of glory between the 11th and 15th centuries. The construction of the new building of the monastery took place between 1728 and 1732.

The monastery was officially abolished during the secularization from 1803 to 1835, but nevertheless it continued its activity in the form of a convent. As there were no buyers for the monastery buildings, the nuns were allowed to stay. King Louis I of Bavaria ordered the re-establishment of the monastery in 1836 with the provision that Benedictines ensure their own existence by opening schools. From 1837, they devoted themselves to educating girls in the Irmengard Gymnasium with boarding school (until 1982) and (since 1983) in the Irmengard Vocational School (former Lower Seminary for Women's Social Activities), which they administered until 1995. .
