Negril is a city in Jamaica.

On Spanish maps, the westernmost point of the island is called Punta Negrilla designated. In the centuries that followed, pirates attacked passing ships from there.

Development began in 1958. Drainage canals were drawn through the swamp and the road to Montego Bay was built. The largest building at the time was the Fisherman's Inn restaurant on the roundabout. At the end of the 6 kilometer long, sandy bay there was only one hotel. Halfway in between they met at the Negril Sands Club. Shortly after the roundabout there were still a few houses owned by the WISCO sugar plantation, Frome, where the management met from time to time and held company parties. On the side of the road facing away from the sea, the Great Morass, an inaccessible swamp area of ​​2,400 hectares, extends.

Dropouts and hippies brought Negril out of its slumber in the 1970s. Plans were drawn up to drain the swamp and build a Jamaican Las Vegas. Fortunately, the necessary donors could not be found and now there is a law that structures must not tower over the palm trees. Instead, the whole land between the main road and the sea was divided into parcels about 75 m wide, and the first large hotel opened in 1977. Now there are so many of them that the electricity and water supplies regularly collapse. Towards the turn of the millennium, tourism spreads ever further north. Bloody Bay, too, a hundred years ago whalers went about their bloody business here, is now fully developed and is being completely built up.

Since Negril has little hinterland and hinterland, most of the tourist life takes place on the beach between the Negril River and the small island of Booby Cay, where one holiday complex lies next to the other. On West End Road in the south, where the coast is rocky, there are fewer hotels, but more restaurants and shops selling bath towels, T-shirts, carvings, records and souvenirs. Rick's Cafe, Kaiser's Cafe and, near the lighthouse built in 1894, the LTU Bar are world-famous. The prices in Negril are very different, higher in the beach hotels than on West End Road; in the simple Jamaican style buildings on the side of the street away from the sea it is cheaper than in the bars and restaurants with satellite TV.

For technical reasons, when describing Negril, a division is made between the place itself with the rocky coast in the south and the northern coastline Negril Beach, which begins at the roundabout on the Negril River. This northern part is limited to the area to the right and left of the main road to Montego Bay, Norman Manley Boulevard. In the following, Norman Manley Boulevard is always referred to as "N.M.B." addressed.

Two restaurants in Negril are to be highlighted as absolute "must be". Cosmos restaurant on Seven Mile Beach is one of the oldest restaurants on the beach. At the beginning, in the 1970s, there was only one large hut (still standing today) and shabby changing rooms. Today it has become a chic beach restaurant with a bar, with a few small additional huts in which souvenirs and T-shirts are sold, at very good prices.

Much better known today Rick's Cafe. For years the crowds have flocked there every evening to watch the sunset. At the entrance, at the cash register, you have to buy your own money (small, round plastic disks) and use it to pay for everything. Drinks have unit prices, one, two or three tokens, so the staff has no problems with changing money and can serve drinks more quickly. In addition to the sunset there is the second "sensation" there. A few meters from the bar there is a concrete platform from which the daredevils throw themselves about 10 m into the sea. Every jump is of course recognized and photographed accordingly by the audience. Stone stairs then lead from the water back up to the bar level.

Negril Airport is a small regional airport. It is three miles north of the Negril roundabout.

In the street

Negril is the westernmost place on the island of Jamaica. You can get there on the well-developed national road A 1 from Montego Bay, halfway through the town of Lucea (82 km). At the same time he's about that A 2 accessible from Spanish Town via May Pen, Mandeville and Savanna-La-Mar.

Tourist Attractions

  • South Negril lighthouse. A 27 m high, round concrete tower built in 1894 by a French company. The 4 m high metal lamp compartment is placed on top. The light is powered by solar energy.
