Neiwan (內 灣) is a city in TaiwanHsinchu Township.
background
Neiwan is located in the county Hsinchu. Most of the inhabitants are Hakka. During the Japanese occupation, Neiwan served as a hub for the transportation of coal and wood. After the mines closed in the 1960s, the village lost its importance. Around 2000 the village was upgraded for tourism and now serves as a tourist magnet, especially for weekenders, and is one of Taiwan's most famous "old streets".

The old street
The main attraction in Neiwan is the old street. In the historical buildings you can find souvenir shops, food stores or small gambling halls. It can get very crowded here, especially on weekends.
A little away from the crowds, there is an old suspension bridge over the river in the south.

In the old street there are not only various delicacies but also various odds and ends that you absolutely need.

You don't have to starve to death in Neiwan. One food store follows the other, especially on the old street, and everyone can find something. But you should take a little more time and try the local Hakka specialties. These include the Hakka rice cake, Hakka Lei tea and Douhua, a sweet skewer made from fresh tofu.
