Neunburg vorm Wald is a city in Upper Palatinate Forest.

background

Neunburg vorm Wald can look back on a long and eventful city history. The first documentary mention of the city in the Upper Palatinate Forest will mark the 1000th anniversary in 2017.

Settlement of the Schwarzach valley began in early history. In the Middle Ages, the area of what is now the "Aign" district around the Jakobskirche was initially settled. When the new castle was built on the opposite rock spur, the name "Neunburg" emerged from it. Neunburg later became the royal seat of the Wittelsbach family and the seat of the Count Palatine Johann. Most of the historic old town and its fortifications have been preserved to this day.

Under National Socialism, death marches by concentration camp prisoners from the Flossenbürg concentration camp passed through Neunburg and the surrounding area. Outside the city, the SS carried out a massacre and murdered a large number of the prisoners. They were buried on the orders of the American occupiers in a concentration camp cemetery on the Plattenberg.

Today Neunburg vorm Wald is an important business location and medium-sized center in the Schwandorf district. The electrical and food industries are the most important industries in the region.
