Niamey is the capital of Niger. The city lies on both sides of the Niger River. It has an international airport.
background
The actual founding of Niamey's city is not known. The settlement was probably founded in the 18th century. The development into an important city began with the establishment of a settlement by the French colonial power in the late 19th century. Already about 30 years later in 1926 Niamey became the capital of Niger. The population has since grown from around 3,000 to around 800,000 in 2000. The main reason for the rapid population growth is to be found in the rural exodus. This is favored by the frequent periods of drought.
The city is mainly built using traditional clay construction. Mostly Europeans live in the two villa districts.
