- 1 Fort de Nieuw Amsterdam – Main tourist attraction. When in 1712 the French carried out a successful attack on some plantations around Fort Zeelandia, this fort was built on the right bank of the river. In 1873, the fort became a penal colony, which served for the internment of prisoners who had committed the most serious crimes.
