Regions
The administrative division of Nicaragua comprises 15 departments (departamentos) and 2 autonomous regions (región autónoma). The municipalities (municipios) are classified at a lower level, 152 of which are separated.
Autonomous regions (Autonomous Communities) follow the Spanish model. They cover the areas of the country located in the eastern part of the country where there is an English-speaking minority. They were introduced in 1986 to replace the dissolved 16th Zelaya Department. These regions are headed by a governor and a regional council.
Cities
According to official data from 2009, Nicaragua had over 50 cities with a population of over 8,000. residents. The capital of the country, Managua, was the only city with over half a million inhabitants; 4 cities with a population of 100,000 ÷ 500,000; 5 cities with a population of 50,000 ÷ 100,000; 13 cities with a population of 25,000 ÷ 50,000 and the rest of the cities below 25,000 residents. In 1990, the urban population comprised 59.3% of the total population of Nicaragua. Most of the cities are located in the western part of the country, in a tectonic ditch running parallel to the Pacific coast. Further east, the network of cities is much rarer.
