Nizhny Novgorod - Nizhni Nóvgorod

Nizhny Novgorod (in Russian Ни́жний Но́вгород, Nižnij Novgorod, ‘New Town Below’) is in Russia. Colloquially abbreviated to Nizhny , is the fifth largest city in Russia, after Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Novosibirsk and Yekaterinburg. It had a population in 2018 of 1.26 million. It is the economic and cultural center of the vast economic region of the Volga, and also the administrative center of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast and the Volga Federal District.

From 1932 to 1990 the city was known as Gorky (Го́рький), in honor of the writer Maxim Gorky. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the old name was restored.

Don't confuse Nizhny Novgorod with Novgorod (or, completely, Veliky Novgorod), which is a different city. In particular, do not shorten the name Nizhny Novgorod to Novgorod.

Districts

The city is divided by the Oka River into two main parts: the upper city (Verkhnyaya or Nagornaya chast ) on the right mountain side and the lower city (Nizhnyaya or Zarechnaya chast - which literally means "the part on the river") on the left bank of the river. The Upper Town is the old historical part of Nizhny Novgorod, while the Lower Town is larger, newer, and made up of more industrial districts.Center

It forms around the Kremlin. The city center is not in the center, as in other cities. In Nizhny Novgorod, the center is in the northeast. Includes the Kremlin , from which the central streets Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Y Rozhdestvenskaya . Here are a lot of 18th and 19th century architecture , museums, theaters, discos, restaurants and everything you need for a fun vacation.

In the Square of the Revolution there are three large shopping centers. Behind the station are two more.

Sormovo town district

In the style of Stalin's Empire. The Revolution of 1905 began here, that's why there are many monuments that remember it. If you want to immerse yourself in the Soviet Union era of the 1930s, this district is for you. The center of Sormovo was built with Stalinist skyscrapers with beautiful facades. Here you can see the magnificent large warehouses Sormovskie zori , the Cathedral of the Sormovo Transfiguration (too bad it was blocked by high-rise buildings), a Barricade School, a hydrofoil rocket monument.

Avtozavod

The main industrial center of the city. Here is the famous GAZ (Gorky Automobile Plant), whose area is almost half of the district. It is considered the most comfortable district of the city, with several transport interchanges, metro and airport. This, the so-called "city in the city". There are many interesting places, such as the Culture Park and the Culture palace, Sotsgorod, the Kiselev Square and the Strigino forest.

Moskovsky district

This district has almost no tourist value. It is on Line 2 of the metro.

Leninsky District

This district has almost no tourist value. The exception is only the Bugrov business park.

Edit

  • 9 The spit of Nizhny Novgorod (Стрелка, Strelka). It is the place of confluence of the Oka and the Volga. In the middle is the Cathedral yellow of Saint Alexander Nevsky . There are several ways to access it from Bolshaya Pokrovskaya, all of which involve going through small side streets; The old buildings in these are worth seeing on your own. You can also try climbing any of the many stairs on Rozhdestvenskaya Street. The embankment itself offers views over the lower part of the city and views to the northwest along the Volga. Sometimes festivals and events are held there; the hillside has many trails and is very walkable. There are also two pedestrian bridges, and a third from Zalomov Street, which leads to a small area of old wooden houses. Edit

winter sports

During winter, with a permanent snow cover, Nizhny offers different possibilities for winter sports. Some of them are listed below.

  • Skating It is possible on many open ice rinks, starting from a dear sized hockey rink, often located near schools, poorly maintained, lacking any room where you can leave your belongings, but free for entry, up to football in size (and more) stadiums with adequate infrastructure, skate rental and paid admission.
    • 5 Trud Stadium (Стадион Труд), 30 Yubileyny bulvar (бульвар Юбилейный) (Access to the stadium is via a bridge over a small river.), [[16]] , [[17]], fax: 7 (831) 225-12-73. Afternoons of F-Su. A large open stadium with cooling machines that allow ice quality to be maintained even when the air temperature is above freezing (up to 10 ° C); therefore it is open roughly from late October to early April and probably has the best ice in town. During this period, the stadium is a venue for many competitions and sporting events, but on Friday and Sunday nights (approximately from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., it is better to check before you go) open for public skating. It is also open for public skating every night during the holidays, especially in the first week of January. Have a skate rental service and a wardrobe in a small building; Also rooms where you can change your boots for skates. You will also find stalls selling hot tea and sandwiches inside. Being the most popular of the skating venues in Nizhny, it is often crowded. 150 руб entrance, 100 руб for an hour skate rental. Edit
    • 6 Dinamo Stadium (Стадион Динамо), 53 Bolshaya Pokrovskaya (Большая Покровская) (entrance through the arch to the left of the October cinema (Октябрь)), [[18]], fax: 7 (831) 278-01-74. Another great open stadium with public skating almost every night during the winter. There are no cooling machines, so there is no skating in October and November and generally in December as well; only when daytime temperatures drop below freezing do they ice the stadium. Even after this, the quality of the ice may not be the best, especially during periods when the air temperature rises back to freezing. However, because of its location in the city center and because it is open almost every day and for longer hours than Trud, it is also popular. It has a skate rental service and a cloakroom inside a small building, you can change your boots for skates in a long corridor that exists. Edit
    • The mega Mall also has a very small skating rink in the main hall, but it is of interest only during the summer, when the large skating rinks don't work.
  • The ski of ground it is possible in many parks of Nizhny Novgorod and in many forests surrounding the city; Almost in every park you will find a circular ski slope for classic skiing. The larger forested areas, the primary Schelkovsky Khutor (Щелковский Хутор) and the adjacent Ankudinovsky forest (Анкудиновский лес) in the upper town, and the Dubravy forest (Дубравный) at the far end of Sormo classic and far ski slopes have skating. However, the infrastructure for ski rental is not very widespread. Also note that most of the slopes are not illuminated so skiing after about 3pm, when it starts to get dark, will not be pleasant.
    • 7 Ski rental at school 135 (Прокат лыж в школе 135), 22 Koreyskaya Street (ул. Корейская) (in the basement, entrance from the back of the school building). A ski rental office near the Schelkovsky Khutor forest. You can leave your belongings there and have a cup of hot tea on the way back. Edit
  • 8 Khabarskoye Sports Club (Спорткомплекс Хабарское), Khabarskoye Village, 1 Nagornaya Street. (деревня Хабарское, ул. Нагорная, 1) (Approximately 30 km from the city limit, near the city of Bogorodsk, on the high bank of Oka), [[19]] , [910-873-11-82], [[20]] .Alpine ski on the steep hills of the high bank of the Oka River on the outskirts of the city. However, it is not so easy to reach them.

Souvenirs

Apart from simple souvenirs like thick pencils with the name of the city, which are present in all Russian cities with only the name changed, and have nothing to do with Russian traditions, there are some souvenirs that are really Russian and really Nizhni -Novgorodians. There are also other traditional Russian souvenirs, such as wooden items painted in the Gorodets style and many different Matryoshkas.

There are many stores for each chain, so only a couple of the most central ones are listed for each chain. The quality of food is generally good in all stores, but it is recommended to check the expiration dates of items that do not last long (such as dairy products). • Seven (the signs are also in Latin script). Like Spar, they also have stores that range from small to quite large, they accept credit cards, they have a wider selection than Magnit, but they are somewhat more expensive. Unlike Spar, they don't have many stores. Some shops in the center are: 41 Piskunov st. (ул. Пискунова , inside a shopping center known as Нижегородский универсам Nizhegorodsky universam) - this is probably the center of the department stores ; 4 Vaneev st. ( ул. Ванеева ), 63 Belinsky st. ( ул. Belinskogo , inside the Etagi shopping center). Edit
  • Also, almost every shopping center (see below) has a grocery store. In addition to the mentioned chains, you can find stores Auchan (Ашан) there. If you're looking for a really wide selection and inexpensive price, head over to one of these, but you'll have to get out of the city center.
