Nursultan (formerly called Tselinograd, Aqmola and Astana, Kazakh and Russian: Астана) is the capital of Kazakhstan. The city is located on the river Ishim, in a flat steppe region, in northern Kazakhstan.
Info
The city was founded in 1824 by Siberian Cossacks as a fortress on the headwaters of the Ishim River. The city was given the name Akmolinsk. In 1961, the city was renamed Tselinograd and declared the capital of the Soviet territory of the "Virgin Lands" (in Russian: "tselina"). This happened as part of a campaign by Nikita Khrushchev to convert virgin steppe land into agricultural land on a large scale.
After Kazakhstan gained independence, the city and surrounding territory were renamed Aqmola ("White Tombstone") in 1991. In 1994, the city was designated as the future capital of the newly independent country. The city was again given a new name after it became capital in 1997 instead of Almaty.
