Weather

The island's climate is particularly mild thanks to the influence of the Atlantic Ocean. The winters are mild and the summers are temperate. City

  • Noirmoutier-en-l'Île  – The town of Noirmoutier-en-l'Île located in the northeast of the island is the historical capital of the island. Its center is marked by old monuments such as the castle, the St-Philbert church, the Jacobsen Hotel, etc. It is populated by around 4,800 inhabitants. Its municipality covers the northern third of the island and includes salt marshes, an agricultural plain, the seaside resort of Bois de la Chaize, the former Abbey of Blanche as well as the two towns of Vieil and l'Herbaudière. The rocky nature of the coasts means that the beaches are rather small, like those bordering the Bois de la Chaize (eg Dames beach, Souzeaux beach, Anse Rouge ...).
  • Old  – The village of Vieil is located north of Noirmoutier-en-l'Île and is part of its municipal territory. It is a peaceful village made up of quiet streets stretching between the Bois de la Chaize and the Bois de la Blanche. The beaches are rather rocky.
  • Herbaudière  – The village of l'Herbaudière is located in the northwest of the island and is also part of the municipality of Noirmoutier-en-l'Île. It is the island's fishing port (2nd in the Vendée department). Luzeronde beach, to the south of l'Herbaudière, is sandy and quite steeply sloping, it offers a view of the Ile du Pilier (northwest of the island).
  • The Thorn  – The village of Épine is located to the west of the island. With a population of over 1,700 inhabitants, its town includes part of the salt marshes, the port of Morin (north of the town), part of the Eloux wood (south of the town) and the Bosse mill. The beaches of L'Épine form a continuous sandy cordon bearing different names depending on the areas (St-Jean beach, Martinière beach, etc.) punctuated by breakwaters which contribute to the island's defense against the sea.
  • La Guérinière  – The village of La Guérinière is located in the center of the island. Its municipality has about 1,500 inhabitants with the seaside village of Sables d'Or and Tresson, located to the south of the village. The sandy beach of La Guérinière offers a view of the bouchots (culture of mussels) installed at sea and visible at low tide.
  • Barbâtre  – The village of Barbâtre, elongated in shape by the extension of suburban housing estates, has almost 1,800 inhabitants. It is the southernmost town of the island, it includes the two roads connecting the island of Noirmoutier to the mainland: the Passage du Gois (submersible roadway) and the bridge. The urbanization of the twentieth century extended the village over the former hamlets of Midi, Frandière and La Fosse. The beach of the Midi is the beach of Barbâtre, it is the longest of the island, sandy rim of more than 5 km.

Security

In winter, the police are rarely present. During the tourist season, there are a few police officers, but crime remains minimal or even non-existent. The main accidents are often due to the passage of gois, which can close in on people who take this road when the tide rises. These people find themselves trapped among the waves, with a ruined car at best. However, these accidents remain very rare.
