Of course, in your own interest and that of others, you must immediately and strictly follow government instructions.

The North Cape (Norwegian: Nordkapp) is a tourist spot in Norway.

Info

North Cape with a view over the Barents Sea

It is considered the northernmost point of the van European mainland. However, the nearby Knivskjelodden peninsula is just a little further north. Moreover, the North Cape is located on an island, namely Magerøya, which is nowadays connected to the mainland by a tunnel (the North Cape Tunnel). On the "real" mainland, the actual northernmost point is Kinnarodden, which is also in Norway. The North Cape is located in the municipality of the same name Nordkapp.

Arrive

By plane

By train

By car

The North Cape is easily accessible by car via the E69 motorway. Be careful during the winter months. The last part of about 240 km can be very slippery due to the difficulty of keeping ice-free. Advice: tires with spikes to keep the necessary grip. The visit to the actual Nordkapp is worth it. In convoy, the last 15 km is possible twice a day, namely at 11:30 and 12:30.

To look at

The North Cape Hall is located close to the actual North Cape. Because the North Cape Hall is located in a landscape protected area, the three-storey building was carved into the rock. In the very touristy whole there is a shop, a cinema, a few cafes and restaurants.

To do

North Cape shrouded in fog, seen from the hiking trail to Knivskjelodden

During the summer the sun does not set for several weeks and in the winter the sun does not rise for several weeks. The trip to the North Cape is easy to do, but it is a tourist attraction where many people come around the month of June to not watch the sun go down at night. Entry to the North Cape must be paid for, military personnel receive a discount.

Due to the weather, the view is not always spectacular. The North Cape itself is often shrouded in fog. However, when it is clear, the view is spectacular! Some hikers park their car well in front of the entrance to the North Cape to avoid the hefty entrance fee and walk along the coastline to the North Cape.

Walking Tours

One can take a hike at the North Cape to Knivskjelodden; the northernmost mainland of Europe. The tour starts from the parking lot on the E69, about 7 kilometers before the North Cape plateau. This walk is recommended by various tourist information, stating that the walk takes about 5 hours. However, this walk is about 8 to 9 km. It takes about 3 to 3.5 hours for most. At the end of the walk, a visitor/logbook can be signed, which is also nice to read.

The path is quite muddy and slippery after a rain shower and not always clearly visible. The walk itself shows a piece of Norway at its best and is worth it. However, there is a lot of walking on sharp rocks and stones. The weather is unpredictable, one minute pleasant and the next cold wind with rain or fog. The difference in height during the walk is about 400m. Some tips are therefore:

  • Leave a visible note in the car with departure time and expected return (/- 7 hours later), possibly with telephone number.
  • Good walking shoes
  • GPS with route is useful
  • Rain and warm clothing even if the weather is still so beautiful
  • GSM works in this area

As a souvenir of this walking route you can buy a certificate at the local tourist information and campsites and you could also buy a pin at the campsites.
