the Pacific Northwest is a region of United States known for its beautiful coastline, very green interior, rainy climate and spectacular mountains.

Understand

Even though it is thought of as a green and rainy region, the Northwest includes many climatic zones. Certainly, the Pacific coast as well as the great valleys of Willamette and Puget Sound know a climate which is very humid and little sunny for eight months of the year; they are therefore to be visited during the summer, when the weather is normally very nice. In contrast, regions further from the ocean - and especially those beyond the Cascade Mountains - are very dry year round. In winter it often happens that mountain passes are closed due to snow.

As for them, the inhabitants of this region are numerous to work in the large computer companies (Microsoft, Intel ...) and aerospace (in particular Boeing). And thanks to its beautiful landscapes which are the dreams of lovers of the great outdoors, there are also the headquarters of a few companies dedicated to it: Nike, Eddie Bauer ...

Finally, let's not forget the terroir, which produces, among other things, enormous quantities of grapes, apples and other fruits, wheat ... not to mention forest products. Don't miss out on trying local produce like Oregon wines and beers produced in Portland and Seattle. Without forgetting Starbucks of course!

The Pacific Northwest is an outdoorsy place, and there are lots of places to camp and see in the Pacific Northwest. Here are the top few that you should check out.

  • Mount Rainier National Park: Extremely photogenic mountain, rising from near sea level to 14,410 feet (4 392 m).
  • Olympic national park: Contains coastal temperate rainforest and heavily snow-capped mountains, with even a few glaciers.
  • Crater Lake National Park: The deepest lake in North America, known for its azure blue color.
  • Mount Hood: Ski course in August?
  • Mount Baker: We ski the glacier there in July.
  • San Juan Islands : Normally protected from the elements by the Olympic mountains, and therefore often sunnier than the whole region. Magnificent landscapes to explore by ferry, or even by kayak.
  • Opal Creek: Located in central Oregon, this historic site offers an unforgettable tour of an old growth forest, as well as hikes, swimming, and unique accommodations.

Health

When you go out into the wild, remember to take:

  • insect repellent
  • plenty of drinking water (water from rivers and lakes that looks pure and fresh, but it is rarely drinkable)
  • a first aid kit
  • cell phone - although service is poor in most rural areas
  • waterproof clothing

In general, the nature of the Northwest brings little danger (e.g. poisonous snakes are only found east of the Cascade Mountains), but the forests are still home to some dangerous beasts (bears, coyotes ... ). So be vigilant and never leave food within reach of any wild animals.
