The parts North and West of Singapore is the city-state's “hinterland” and overlooks Bishan, Ang Mo Kio, Khatib, Yishun, Sembawang and Woodlands and the mountainous jungle areas of Buona Vista, Commonwealth, Ayer Rajah, NUS and Telok Blangah . Jurong forms part of the hinterland of Singapore. These are public housing blocks in the jungle. There is also a large industrial area around the Tuas area. In addition, it includes an island reclaimed from the sea, soberly called Jurong Island, and made up of 7 smaller islands that have been artificially merged.

The North-South line reaches Marsiling from Toa Payoh via Braddell, Bishan, Ang Mo Kio, Yio Chu Kang, Khatib, Yishun, Sembawang, Admiralty and Woodlands. The East-West line serves the entire area from Outram Park, via Tiong Bahru, Redhill, Queenstown, Commonwealth, Buona Vista, Dover and Clementi, and emerges in Jurong district. The Circular Line connects the areas of Telok Blangah, Labrador, West Coast, Ayer Rajah and Holland Village.
