THE West New Guinea (also known as West Papua, until the year 2000 officially called Irian Jaya and previously from Dutch New Guinea) occupies the entire western part of the island of New Guinea, which belongs to Indonesia. 40 nearby islands are part of its territory. The independent nation of Papua New Guinea occupies the remaining area of the island, that is, its eastern part.
Papua maintains many traditional cultures and is home to some of the richest biodiversity in the world. Lorentz National Park is included in the World Heritage List of UNESCO, is the largest protected area in this region of the Asia.
