Characteristic
Nové Mesto nad Váhom, a small, beautiful town is located in the west of Slovakia, 100 km north of Bratislava. The city has about 21,000 inhabitants and is situated in a picturesque valley between Biele Karpatami and Powazski Inowiec, and thanks to its location and natural beauty, it offers many interesting things to see and do.
History
Even though the name of the city is Nowe Miasto nad Wagiem, the city's environment was established many years ago. According to several archaeological sites found in the city, in the part called "Mnešice", the city belongs to one of the most important historical places in Slovakia. Archaeologists have found that people lived and had their homes in these places 240,000 years ago. In the past, the city was built as a large fortress with several towers that helped defend the city and its inhabitants. The settlement was bombed many times by soldiers and the military, but also by the adventurous Turks, and their houses and everything were ruined. The oldest document that has been written about the history of the New Town on the Vah comes from 1253, when King Bela, the fourth, granted the city settlement dignity because of the duties entrusted to it by citizens during the terrible invasion of the Turks. Gradually, the city became a very important business center thanks to a very convenient location where people had good conditions for growth and upbringing. Fairs were very often held where people exchanged various products and things. Several types of handicrafts were also spread in the city, incl. footwear, ceramic or fur products. To this day, Nové Mesto nad Váhom is a very important place for many industrial factories and companies, mainly foreign, employing many people from all over the region.

The city is located on the route of the most important railway line in Slovakia Bratislava-Žilina-Košice. The journey from Bratislava by train takes 1 h 10 and costs 5.20 €.

It is a local road junction. The city is located on the D1 highway running from Bratislava via Žilina to Košice. The national roads from Tranwa, Trencin and Brno in the Czech Republic cross here.

Worth seeing
The very rich culture of the city has left many valuable and impressive monuments here. In the historical part of the city it is located Roman Catholic Church with a Romanesque tower from the 13th century that has been restored in the Gothic and Baroque styles. The rich baroque interior was made by Italian workers who had been building it for 15 years. In the past, this church was just a very poor basilica, but today it belongs to the largest dominant of the city. There were many Jews in the city who had beautiful houses, which also belong to the great ornaments of the New Town on the Wagem. There are several small churches and chapels in the city, incl. church located at the beginning of the 18th century Saint Ondrejwhich in the past was considered a place for the very poor and homeless. There is also another very important historical monument on the main square. This Renaissance building dates from 1740 and was once the palace of one wealthy noble family. In the renovated part of the house, there are concentrated ethnographic and historical documents about Nowe Miasto nad Wagiem and other nearby towns. He's standing in front of the museum statue of Saint Florian being the scaffolding motif. Not so far from this place, the center of the square is decorated with a sculpture that is a memento of a plaque that was located in the city in 1694.
