The name Nuwara Eliya is translated as City of light or City of the wide plain. It was founded by the British. It all started around 1830 with a sanatorium to cure tropical diseases, and the British benefited from the pleasant climate with an annual mean of 16 ° C. In 1846 it was the natural scientist Samuel Bakerwho founded the city.
