Oberá is in the province Misiones in the northeast of Argentina.

background

Oberà is a natural oasis and is also called the capital of the jungle (la Capital del Monte). The city is built into a hilly landscape and therefore the streets run with many inclines and declines. With the red earth typical of the place and surrounded by the subtropical rainforest with many smaller rivers and waterfalls, it offers a unique color spectacle for the eye. There are also many tea and tobacco plantations in the province.

Immigrants from all over the world came to Argentina hoping to find a better life. The first immigrants to come to Misiones in 1902 were from Germany, Sweden, Portugal and Spain. They founded the “Yerbal Viejo” colony. In 1908 the surveyor Francisco Foulland measured the area from the colonies “Picada Bonpland” to “Yerbal Viejo” and divided it into three zones, the third zone was later named Oberà. Between 1911 and 1912 immigrants came from Switzerland, France, Norway, Sweden and Germany and settled in the Oberà area. Oberà was founded on July 9, 1928 and means "the shining one" in the Guaraní language. From then on, Oberà grew through immigrants from all over the world. People settled in this city not only from Europe but also from Asia, Japan and the neighboring countries Brazil and Paraguay.

The festival of immigrants

On September 4th, 1980 (Immigrant Day), groups of immigrants decided to meet to share their food cultures, customs and traditions that they had brought with them from various countries. At first there were only a few families who took part, but more and more people came every year. In 1992 the provincial festival of immigrants became the national festival of immigrants, which is still held annually in Oberà. Since 1997 the festival has taken place in the "Parque de las Naciones". There the 16 different immigrant countries each built a house typical of their homeland. Between September 4th and 14th during the National Festival of Immigrants, each country offers specialties in its home and also performs traditional dances. During this event, a queen of immigrants will be chosen and artists from the province, the nation and the world will perform. Thousands of people from Argentina and abroad come to the festival every year.
