THE'Kaliningrad Oblast is a region of Russia located east of the Baltic Sea which is separated from the rest of the country.
Understand
Kaliningrad Oblast is the westernmost region of the Russia. In fact, it forms an exclave of Russia having no land connection with the rest of the federation. She is surrounded by the Lithuania to the north and east, by the Poland to the south and by the Baltic Sea to the west. The largest city and administrative center of the oblast is Kaliningrad. Historically, Kaliningrad was the capital of the ancient province German of East Prussia under the name of Königsberg. The region was annexed to the Soviet Union in 1945. The German population was either killed or fled to West Germany. In addition, the Germans in the region continued to be expelled until 1950. This, together with the arrival of Russians to occupy the territory, means that the Russians have been in the majority since that time.
Since the accession of the Lithuania and some Poland to theEuropean Union, the Kaliningrad oblast has become landlocked in the Schengen area, making land links with the rest of Russia difficult. Travel to the rest of Russia without a visa for residents of the oblast is only possible by air or sea.
