Ocho Rios is a city in Jamaica.

background

"Eight rivers" is a wrong name, there has never been so many rivers there, the Spanish called the place "Las Chorreras" the waterfalls. 40 years ago Ocho Rios was still a small, insignificant fishing village with a few exclusive hotels that were laid out a long way along the coast. There was still the Playboy Club in today's Sandals near St. Ann's Bay, the Jamaica Hilton ex Eden II and the Shaw Park Hotel were not located by the White River directly on the sea, but just above the village, where today only the Botanical is located Garden reminiscent of the hotel. In the west, the large loading facilities of the bauxite industry are attached. Since the beginning of the 1950s, the iron ore from the opencast mine came to the coast via a 10 km long cable car. Since 1984 only sugar has been loaded there. Today the facilities are mainly used as a quay for cruise ships that regularly come to Ocho Rios. At the end of the 1960s, the first sandy beach was washed up and paved with hotels. A bypass has now been completed. If the place is not overcrowded with day tourists from up to three cruise ships, you should definitely visit some of the beautiful surroundings. The greater Ocho Rios area begins in the west, 3 km from the center, at the Dunns River waterfalls. In the east it ends 6 km from the center behind the White River at Harmony Hall.

getting there

By plane

International flights land in Montego Bay, 65 miles from Ocho Rios. The regional airport Boscobel is located 16½ km east of Ocho Rios.

In the street

Ocho Rios is very centrally located about halfway between Montego Bay and Port Antonio. The north-south connection to Kingston also begins here. The place has a parking problem. There is a larger parking lot for buses and cars on the bypass road. In the center itself there are two larger parking spaces next to the shopping centers. Since 2008 these fees have to be paid: 100 Jamaica dollars per hour. Another small parking lot is at the entrance to the cruise jetty. This parking lot belongs to the Island Village shopping center. In 2008 this place was still free of charge.

By boat

The port of Ocho Rios is regularly called by cruise ships. Carnival Cruises, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean Lines and TUI Cruises have the island in their program. There are days when there are three ships at the same time, then absolute chaos reigns in the place. From 1 Cruise docks you go five minutes to the town center. Directly at the exit of the jetty, the tourist will find restaurants, a small beach and the secure Island Village shopping center.

shop

From the beginning of the village to the end at the level of the Royal Plantation Hotel, you can always find smaller and larger shops and a hardware store along Main Street (Main Road). Basically you can limit your shopping to the small area of Main Street between the beginning of the town east of Reynold's Pier and the intersection with the clock tower. One shopping center is lined up with the other on this 1,000-meter-long stretch of road.

Before the fork in the road between the bypass and Main Street, a narrow path on the sea side leads to a "wild" craft market with chaotic parking spaces, not recommended.
