Ollantaytambo is also interesting because of its fortress, which was also a sanctuary of the Incas. From here they controlled access to the Urubamba Valley from the north, and this is where they retreated after losing the Battle of Sacsayhuaman to the Spanish.

The village is also interesting because of its architecture, which still remains from the Inca period: the narrow streets form 15 rectangular areas, so-called. Canchassurrounded by walls. Within each of these canchas there are the buildings of a farm, in which people still live largely as in ancient times. The way in which the ancestors were dealt with is striking: some of the remains are kept in the apartment, clothed, provided with food, and sometimes given a cigarette or one Chicha (Corn beer). And when dozens of guinea pigs live in a small stall next to the kitchen, it is not intended as a toy for the youngsters, but purely practical as a supply of meat cuy frito, roast guinea pigs, in case a surprising visitor arrives.
