Oviedo is the capital of spanish province Asturias.

background

In the 8th century, the Moors had conquered almost the entire Iberian Peninsula. However, they could not bring the region north of the Cantabrian Mountains under their rule. The Kingdom of Asturias with the capital Oviedo arose from this area. In the 9th and 10th centuries, an architectural style called pre-Romanesque developed here. Some of these structures belong to the UNESCO world cultural heritage.
