Oyster Pond is a city in Saint Martin.
background
Oyster Pond is a protected bay that owes its name to its resemblance to the shape of an oyster. According to the story, more than 350 years ago this was also the starting point for the legendary miter race, in which a French and a Dutchman are said to have set off in opposite directions to divide the island. It is the only port on the east coast and a symbol of the peaceful coexistence of two countries on one island. The Dutch-French border runs right through the settlement. This is how it goes across borders in the hotel complex "Captain Oliver's": The guest rooms are on French soil, but the restaurant and docks are behind the unnoticed border on the Dutch side.
The town, previously derided as remote, did not develop until after 1978, when the then young entrepreneur Captain Oliver laid the first foundations for his resort and the French government developed an infrastructure. There was a lot of land for sale, but the building boom didn't start until the late 1990s. As part of a tax reform, it was mainly hotels that were built at that time, but after a certain period these were finally divided up to private owners and are now rented out as apartments. Residents appreciate the quiet neighborhood "in the country" in a pretty location between wild animals and typical Caribbean beaches. Noticeable in between are some fallow buildings - memories of the hurricanes "Luis" and "Lenny".
Quartier D'Orleans is located 2½ km inland as the crow flies.
beaches
- Baie Lucas. Quiet, shady bay, north of Oyster Pond, well suited for diving.
- Dawn Beach. The next bay south of Oyster Pond, but in Dutch territory. Since it is on the Atlantic coast, the sea can be rough. The bay is only partially developed.
- Baie de l'Embouchure, north of the Baie Lucas. Remote and undeveloped wide bay with several islands and a large salt lake on the land side. The bay is very popular with surfers. The site is a protected landscape area.
- Galleon Beach, between Baie de l´Embouchure and Baie Orientale. A reef-protected bay that is popular with families and windsurfers. There is a restaurant and water sports center.
