Map of Pampatar

background

The name Pampatar is of Indian origin and means House of Salt. Once a small fishing village, the city is growing more and more with the neighboring one Porlamar together, and it extends eastward to the Punta Ballena, the easternmost point of Isla Margarita. However, the city's infrastructure cannot quite keep up with the construction boom, so there are numerous holiday homes and apartments near the coast, but hardly any suitable access roads.

getting there

Pampatar is only about 10 km east of Porlamar, to La Asunción it is around 12 km.

View from the Castillo over the Bahia de Pampatar

The old town center of Pampatar with the buildings from the colonial times

  • Castillo de San Carlos Borromeo. A fortress from the 17th century, thoroughly renovated around 1968. The view over the bay is particularly worth seeing Bahia de Pampatar, unfortunately also about a number of building sins in the hinterland. There is a small museum in the fort, the exhibits are mainly weapons and paintings.
  • Iglesia de Santisimo Cristo del Buen Viaje. The actually inconspicuous little church is located directly opposite the fort. There is a legend about the cross on the altar: it is said to have arrived here on a ship from Spain. However, the crew was only able to raise the anchor to continue to Santo Domingo after this crucifix was left here on land. The locals therefore make a pilgrimage to this cross before a long journey and ask for a safe return.
Salt marshes seen from the Punta Ballena lighthouse
  • Casa la Aduana. Or Casa Amarilla, in the former customs house is now a city museum.

Outside the city:

  • 1  Faro Punta Ballena. The lighthouse at the southeastern point of the island was completed in 2007. It belongs to the Navy, but is open every day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. From above you have a good view of the beaches in the southwest and the salt flats in the north. There is a souvenir shop on the ground floor. Those who shy away from the steps of the lighthouse can visit the café below.
