Festivals

  • Sanfermines. The famous festival that the writer Ernest Hemingway in his book Fiesta made world famous, is one of the largest festivals in Spain and has been held annually from July 6th to July 14th since 1591. The bull running, the Encierro, are particularly well-known in Germany; through the narrow streets of the old town to the bullring, they take place every morning at 8 a.m., then the bullfights are at noon. In addition, the festival also means partying into the night in the crowded streets, where the so-called take care of things peñas for mood, these are colorfully mixed up Village music groups who play (and drink) through the crowded village streets. During the festival there is a state of emergency in Pamplona due to visitors from all over the world, many locals have been increasingly annoyed by it in recent years. Room prices are skyrocketing and € 300 / night are not uncommon.
  • Small Sanfermines. This much more contemplative festival, which also largely belongs to the locals, always takes place at the end of September, but there is no bull hunt or bullfighting here. If you are in or around Pamplona at this time, you should definitely make a detour to the old town on Saturday evening or Sunday lunchtime.
