Understand

To arrive

Portuguese and Brazilian citizens do not need a visa to enter the country for a stay of up to 90 days. Portuguese people need a valid passport, while Brazilians only need to present their identity card or valid passport to enter the country. The document must be in excellent condition.

By airplane

Of boat

By car

Think twice before traveling through Paraguay by car. If you're in a large group (with your family, for example) it's probably the best way. However, keep in mind that the police will demand bribes at the numerous checkpoints that exist on the roads. One way to avoid this is to stay next to the car in front when you pass the gas station - they usually stop the first one - so they won't have time to notice the Brazilian license plate. When questioned by the police, avoid saying that this is the first time you have traveled to Paraguay (this can yield 100 reais as a 'fine'). Brazilians living in the country usually leave a small guarani note (1000, 10000) standing by, which they hand over to the police officer, greeting him when they are approached.

By bus/bus

Circular

By airplane

Of boat

If possible, take a cruise from Asunción to the Pantanal. However, departures are limited to tourist conveniences, and may not coincide with the time you are traveling through Paraguay.

By car

You can always rent a car, if you are willing to drop a little more and drive.

By bus/bus

If you want to travel through Paraguay by bus, there is no problem. There are enough buses to go wherever you are willing. It may happen that you have to change buses in the middle of the journey, as there are several bus companies that make the journeys, which is not very relevant, as you will arrive at your destination. The cost of tickets is quite cheap.

By train/train

There is only the tourist train, which runs from Asunción to Areguá. But beware, that when you are visiting, it may not circulate, as there are periods of circulation.

Speak

Spanish and Guarani. However, in Ciudad del Este almost all the merchants speak Portuguese, mainly from the big stores.

Buy

Everything you like and take with you as a souvenir, as everything is cheap: drinks, perfumes, electronics etc.

Borí-borí: soup

chipa: traditional Paraguayan corn bread and cheese in the shape of a ring, leaves, tubes, horseshoes. The most famous are the Luque Chips sold by Chiperas even in travel buses and trains.

Chipa guazu: corn pie

Paraguayan soup: Legend has it that the recipe came about due to an error made by a president's cook when preparing a soup: when he realized he had gone beyond the point of preparation, he would have adapted the recipe to a pie.

Tererê/Te: made with yerba mate (caá). It is taken in gourds or guampas, especially with associated medicinal herbs. It is customary for the Paraguayan people to carry each one of them with their own bottle of cold (tererê) or hot (te) water, for preparation at any time.

drink and go out

sleep

There is no problem in finding a hotel in cities that are close to the road. If you go inland a little, it may be difficult for you. With the exception of a city that is crossed by the road, called Paraguari, which does not have any decent accommodation. Hotels are also cheap.

Learn

Paraguay receives 280,454 visitors per year. The number of visitors increased 1% in 1990. Tourism is weak — except for the large number of Brazilians and Argentines who cross the border every day to buy electronics from the Far East in Ciudad del Este.

As a country with very strong national characteristics of typical music and folklore, it has a valuable tourist potential. Some of its attractions: Lake Ypacaraí, with the resorts of San Bernardino and Areguá; Lake Ypoá; the heels of Monday, Acaray, Guairá; the Jesuit ruins of Trinidad's missionary centers near Encarnación; the monument to Marshal Solano Lopez and the National Pantheon of Heroes, in Asunción. The festival of ñaduti, in Itauguá, is also an attraction, where this type of fine handmade lace, aho poí dresses and wooden and leather items are exhibited.

Work

Safety

As elsewhere, no one is safe, but Paraguay is one of those who can walk at ease, without any problem.

Health

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2009, Paraguay had an average life expectancy of 75 years, ranking fifth in Latin America.

Infant mortality is 18 per thousand live births, it was reduced by 54% from 2000 to 2007. Life expectancy for men is 72 years, while for women it is 78 years.

The main causes of death for Paraguayans are heart, respiratory (pneumonia and tuberculosis), parasitic diseases and cancer. Half of the hospital beds are in Asuncion.

Social legislation guarantees free medical care, but hospitals, with an insufficient number of beds, are found in cities, mainly in the capital. The Inter-American Cooperative Service, created in 1942, administers health and social assistance programs.

Increased life expectancy - the main health indicator of a society, was a great advance, due to the sharp drop in infant mortality, as well as the increase in the number of undergraduate students over 80 years old. In 2007, the amount over 85 years represented 17% of all deaths in 2007, against 14% in 2000.

On December 25, 2009, President Lugo's government has achieved universal and free access to public health services, this is a historic step for the country, this initiative will mainly benefit people with fewer resources. The Health Minister, Esperanza Martinez, said on her billboard the next challenges: the purchase of inputs and improvement of infrastructure and technology. She also admitted that it is necessary to ensure the arrival of health teams across the country.

The Ministry of Health has 10 specialized hospitals, 15 regional hospitals, 137 health centers and 477 health posts. The IPS (Institute of Social Security) has 1 central hospital, seven regional hospitals, 22 health centers and 70 health posts. The military health hospital has a central, three division hospitals, 35 health centers and 26 pharmacies. The Health Police has a central hospital and 22 pharmacies. The National University of Asunción has a Hospital de Clinicas and a Neurospichiatric Hospital. The Catholic University has two hospitals, one in Asunción and the other in Villarrica.

There are approximately 10,200 beds between the public and private sectors in the country, half of them are in Greater Asunción.

Long hours of waiting at the banks of any hospital in the public network are constant indicators that Paraguay needs more health professionals. The number of doctors is 1 for every 915 inhabitants, while the WHO recommends one for 1000 as an ideal.

At the regional level, Paraguay is a nation that has fewer doctors per 100,000 inhabitants, according to the results of the census of employees in the health portfolio, which ended last December. This amount is within the recommended by the WHO as ideal, which is 1 doctor for every 1000 inhabitants. The main problem is the poor distribution of doctors across the country who are concentrated in large metropolitan areas, as well as in Brazil and other countries in the region.

Highly complex treatments are carried out in Argentina, due to the poor infrastructure of the health sector.
