the Elk Island National Park is a national park of canada located in the Edmonton area in Alberta.

Understand

Elk Island National Park is open year round and offers excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. In fact, after the Serengeti plain in Africa, it contains the highest density of ungulate mammals in the world. Herds of wood bison (Bison bison athabascae), plains bison (Bison bison bison)moose (Alces americanus), white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and elk (Cervus canadensis) roam the park freely. The park also includes 250 species of birds in addition to beavers and coyotes. It also protects 224 aboriginal sites and aspen parks, one of Canada's most endangered habitats.

The national park is located along the Yellowhead Freeway (Hwy 16) about an hour's drive east ofEdmonton near Vegreville.

During the summer season, the park offers a campground near Lake Astotin with some services. Nearby communities include hotels, motels, and lodges.

Security

  • You must keep a distance of at least 100 meters bison, moose, deer and elk.
  • If you are driving a vehicle, slow down when there are wildlife near the path.
  • Report aggressive animals to Parks Canada staff.
  • Do not feed wild animals.
  • Do not pick up wild flowers, berries or mushrooms.
  • Keep your pets on a leash at all times.
  • Attracting, disturbing, hunting and molesting wild animals in a national park of Canada are offenses that can be punished with fines of up to 5,000 CAD and up to 6 months in prison.
