Riding Mountain National Park was established in 1929 to protect prairie land from the forest-park of 2 969 km2. In 1986, it was designated, along with the surrounding municipalities, as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO.

The park includes a single community named Wasagaming, but often referred to as Clear Lake.
