To know
The Jökulsárgljúfur is the grandiose canyon located in the north of Iceland, formed by the glacial river Jökulsá á Fjöllum, whose cold and gray sediment waters, but also blue-green, in some transparent mirrors, come directly from the Vatnajökull, and then pour into sea to the north at the bay of Öxarfjörður. In its course it has created one of the largest canyons in the country (the Jökulsárgljúfur), the largest waterfall by extension of the water front in Europe (Dettifoss) and a myriad of caves and very particular lava formations and wide valleys rich in vegetation.
The extraordinary conformation of the gorge, where you can find very regular basalt columns, waterfalls, caves, traces of ancient craters, peaks, is another of the unique places in Iceland, comparable to a few places on Earth for its exceptional beauty, one of these is certainly the Grand Canyon in Arizona.
Background
In the past centuries the area of Ás has been one of the most populated areas of the whole island. This is thanks to the particular microclimate that reigns in the region and its large grazing fields. In the 18th century the whole area was completely devastated by the flood of Jökulsá á Fjöllum which destroyed most of the inhabited centers and made the large pastures sterile, decreeing the end of the prosperity of the entire area. With some exceptions, the whole area, including the Ásbyrgi area, has remained completely uninhabited.
In 2008 it became part of the immense Vatnajökull National Park, which covers more than 12,000 km² of territory.
