History

In 1898, the then president of Transvaal, Paul Kruger, established a reserve in Saba to protect intensely killed animals. In 1926, Saba was connected to the neighboring Shingwedzi reserve and many private farms, thus creating the Kruger National Park. It was opened to tourists only in 1927, and is currently managed by the SANPark (South African National Park Organization) and is probably South Africa's best run park. The main task of the board has become to conduct scientific research and preserve nature unchanged for future generations. Thanks to innovative methods, it was possible to drastically reduce poaching. Cars are checked when entering and exiting the park. Quite strict road rules have been introduced. It is often checked whether tourists comply with the speed limit of 40 km / h. on dirt roads and 50 km / h. on paved roads to reduce the number of animals killed by cars. After the recent addition of Gonarezhou National Park, Manjinji Pan Sanctuary and Malipati in Zimbabwe, and Limpopo National Park in Mozambique, it has an area of almost 2 million. hectares, and is larger than Lesotho. The newly created cross-border park was named The Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, even though national borders are still respected and border crossings are not open all day long.

Climate

South Africa is located on the south side of the equator, therefore the seasons here are opposite to those in Europe and North America. The summer here (September to April) is very hot and sunny with thunderstorms. Temperatures range from 18 ° to 30 ° C in the shade, winter (May to August) is warm and dry with temperatures ranging from 8 ° to 22 ° C.

There are about 336 species of trees, 49 species of fish, 33 species of amphibians, 114 species of reptiles, 507 species of birds and 147 species of mammals. About 8,000 elephants and 1,300 white rhinoceros, 200 black rhinoceros, 300 cheetahs, 3,000 hippos, 900 leopards, 1,500 lions, 2,000 spotted hyenas, 32,000 antelopes, 7,500 elephants, 5,000 giraffes, huge numbers of buffaloes and zebras live within the park.

Most of the Kruger Park area is covered by extensive grassy expanses of thorny acacia, leadwood and marula trees. North of the Olifant River, where rainfall is less than 500 mm per year, the most common tree is mopane, a delicacy of elephants, sassebi, eland, and horse and saber-horned antelopes. The northern part of the park has the most rainfall, which is why vegetation is more varied there.
