As Park and Ride (Short form P R or P&R), parking and traveling are also referred to as the change from vehicles used for motorized individual transport to public transport for local or long-distance public transport, or vice versa.

Park and Ride systems are used to park vehicles used in private motorized transport in public transport. They can now be found in almost every country in the world. In German-speaking countries, there are park-and-ride systems at stations for S-Bahn traffic, local and long-distance rail traffic, and urban traffic (underground trains, light rail vehicles, trams and city buses) as well as regional and long-distance bus services Usually owned by the transport company or the municipalities. Paid park-and-ride facilities are partly operated by private car park companies. While parking tickets are mostly not issued in connection with tickets in German-speaking countries, as is often the case in the Netherlands, parking fees are paid to less busy park-and-ride systems. Ride systems usually via parking ticket machines, at more heavily used park-and-ride systems via pay machines as well as barriers or electronic license plate recognition.As a rule, the parking fee obligation exists without time restrictions, i.e. from Monday to Sunday from 00:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. However, these are significantly cheaper than for multi-storey car parks, underground garages or parking spaces in city centers. The facilities are usually open 24 hours a day. The aim of the systems is a higher utilization of public transport in the interests of environmental and climate protection as well as reducing traffic in the inner cities.

Practical advice
As with parking in general, no valuables should be left behind in the vehicles when park and ride. The operators, transport companies or municipalities assume no liability for theft or damage to property. However, compared to the heavy use of the system, the number of thefts and property damage is relatively low.
