See and Do

The Mekrou River.

The park carries out a number of safaris. If you come to the park on an organized trip, you will definitely go on a safari. If you are alone, you can book one at Portão de Tapoa.

  • ride a jeep - Most cars have a sunroof, and you can see the flora and fauna from this one. The use of jeeps allows you to reach the most inaccessible parts of the park, and see some of the shyest animals.
  • guided walks - Most of the paths are well marked but you have to be guided by a park professional and accompanied by an armed forest guard. You can arrange for a guide when you arrive, but there may be few in high season, so contact the park authorities prior to arrival.
  • Kayaks - A good way to see the park is to float on the Niger River or the Mekrou River in a kayak, with a guide. Here you can see hippos and crocodiles, as well as hundreds of rare species of birds. Cheetahs and other large carnivores come to the riverbanks to drink. There are two types of boats: a paddle-powered kayak for five people, or a motorized kayak for longer distances and larger numbers of people. You can arrange boat safaris at the main gates.
